Go Hollywood or Go Home

The sixties, seventies and eighties are long over. So is a fur bikini. Go Hollywood, that is, completely bald by removing all the hair over your crotch area, including the outer labia and butt. Or leave a landing strip, known as the Brazilian. If you’re afraid to go all the way, but have considered it, rest assured that the Hollywood (or full Brazilian) really is all the rage.
Before the Big Day:
- Research and find a salon (and aesthetician) that specializes in this type of waxing. Choose one that is most sanitary even if it’s more expensive.
- Make an appointment and grow your hair at least ¼ inch for fine hair and ½ inch for coarse hair, or ask the salon for a recommendation.
- Prepare to wear your cotton panties for greater comfort post-wax, and if you have a low pain threshold, take one or two Advil beforehand.
The BIG Day:
1. Greet the aesthetician and state your preference. Be comfortable and relaxed, she’s the expert.
2. Much like a doctor’s office, a table will be covered with disposable paper or a clean sheet. After she leaves the room, remove everything from the waist down (socks are optional) and cover yourself with a small towel. Don’t be shy. Like a gynecologist, she has seen it all before.
3. Lie on your back and let her examine you. She’ll trim hair that is too long and apply talcum powder if necessary. Then she’ll spread the wax, which should be hot but not scalding, over the area with a wooden stick, smooth a rectangular piece of cloth over the wax, and rip it off, hair and all. The sensation is similar to a thick band-aid being ripped off.
4. It is least painful if she is quick, firm and works from the thighs inward. She may request that you hold one side taut while she rips the strip off. To ease the stinging, she’ll place her hand over the area that was just waxed. Let her know how you’re doing and if sore, ask her to use smaller strips for the outer labia.
5. The last part (or sometimes the first) is waxing around the butt, which oddly enough, is the least painful part. You’ll be asked to hold your knees up to your chest, get on all fours, or turn onto your stomach and spread your cheeks.
6. When finished with the wax, she’ll tweeze any remaining hairs, and apply soothing lotion. This entire experience shouldn’t exceed 20 minutes. At home, use unscented lotions to promote healing and exfoliate the area to reduce ingrown hairs.
After the Hollywood wax, your most sensitive skin will feel smoother than you’ve ever known. The good news is that the hair will grow back softer and thinner. The bad news is that you’ll have to do it again in one to two months, but it’s worth it. After all, bare is beautiful.
